SILICONE RUBBER 'BLANKET' MOULD MAKING A two day course 17th & 18th March or 7th & 8th April 2018

Designed with sculptors and makers in mind, this two day course teaches the skill of making a silicone rubber mould from any object of your choice, whatever the shape.

Those attending will learn how to make a high quality silicone faced piece mould with a supporting polymer gypsum strengthened plaster jacket, which will be suitable for the production of casts in: polyurethane resin, wax, plaster, epoxy resin, acrylic resin, cement, polymer clays, etc.

Attendees will need to bring along a single object for casting of no more than 150mm x 150mm (6” x 6”) in size . If your object doesn’t fit this shape, for example it may be 230mm x 75mm (9”x 3”) or 125mm x 175mm (5” x 7”) it will probably still be fine to cast. The 150mm x 150mm size is intended as a rough guide to the anticipated volume of the works. If you are in doubt about the suitability of your object for the course please contact us and we will be able to work it out for you.

Students will be taught:

-How to analyse the objects to be cast and work out a strategy for casting an object

-How to make a clay blanket and plaster jacket for the production of a robust silicone rubber mould capable of producing multiple castings

- How to correctly lay up a mould (i.e. fill it) by hand to produce a hollow casting in polymer reinforced gypsum and in wax

This is a full two day course as there is a lot to learn using this fascinating technique.

The course is taught by Mark Halliday RCA. Mark is an exceptional teacher and sculptor, who has previously worked for nine years as senior lecturer at Cardiff School of Art, before founding New British Art.

The course is held in our open plan workshop studio at Cilyrynys, a former dairy farm in rural Carmarthenshire. We have a growing collection of cast objects on display as well as a good range of reference material for participants to browse.
